Wikipedia turns 20, thanks to donations

One of the worldā€™s most- well known online encyclopedia, Wikipedia recently celebrated itā€™s 20 years of existence milestone. The multilingual open-collaborative, not-for-profit website is created and maintained by a community of volunteer editors who use a wiki-based editing system.

According to Douglas Scott, who is a board member at Wikimedia SA, ā€œWikipedia is different from all the other internet titans out there, donations keep the service running. Peer review makes Wikipedia work. Itā€™s not perfect, but itā€™s as close as we can getā€.

ā€œThere are knowledge gaps in South Africaā€¦ Thereā€™s a lack of diversity of editorsā€¦ Some types of information are well-coveredā€¦ But there are few articles on, say, Xhosa clan names. We need area expertsā€¦ to contributeā€¦ But I donā€™t want to discourage people who donā€™t have credentialsā€¦ Often when youā€™re very knowledgeable about a subject, you canā€™t explain it to people who arenā€™tā€ Scott concluded.
