Calling all fresh music talents from around Jozi

The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), in partnership with TOTAL and associate partner Kaya FM, is presenting an exciting four-hour livestream titled Blooming Sounds from Joburg and is looking for Gauteng’s most talented up-and-coming musicians to perform there. It will be filmed from the iconic Constitution Hill, in Braamfontein, against the backdrop of the women’s prison.

The concert will be broadcast live on www.skyroomlive.com on Saturday 26 September, kicking off at 16h00 and ending at 20h00, it will feature two headline acts and six new bands.

“This time of lockdown has shown us how essential arts and culture are to bring joy to our daily lives and help us reflect on the world that surrounds us. Through this event, we are committed to offering exposure to a new generation of musicians, as well as supporting the music industry that has been severely struck by the pandemic and the cancellation of live events,” says IFAS’s Cultural Attaché, Selen Daver

The broadcast’s primary aim is to provide as much exposure as possible to new musical talents by giving them the opportunity to perform alongside hot headline artists Zoë Modiga – a musician who draws from the roots of African storytelling, Jazz composition and Motown soul to create a sound entirely her own – and Stogie T – one of South Africa’s foremost rappers and poets, and once lead vocalist of Tumi and the Volume.

The first 50 applicants to enter will be considered by a jury consisting of highly reputable music industry specialists and musicians such as Josh Georgio from the Hugh Masekela Foundation and Andrew Poane from Bassline, as well as Jerome Galabert from the Sakifo Festival in Reunion Island and a representative from IFAS and Kaya FM. They will select 12 finalists, after which the headline artists will be included to the jury to select the final 6, who will then perform at Blooming Sounds from Joburg.

Applicants will be considered if they are:

currently staying in Gauteng;
available to perform live at Constitution Hill on 26 September 2020; available for sound check / rehearsal on Friday 25 September 2020, at Constitution Hill
visually strong to keep an online audience enticed for a 20-minute set; no bigger than 5 members;
and must not have signed or have any deals with a record company.

The six chosen artists / bands will get the opportunity to perform on the same platform as the two headlining artists, who bring with them their own audience and will further broaden the online exposure.

The artists will be aired on Kaya FM afterwards, plus footage of the performances will be made available for the artists to use as their own promotional benefit.

To enter, applicants must click through the button on the Bassline website www.bassline.co.za and follow the call for application guidelines.

If you are chosen as one of the 6 performers you will get to play live for 20 minutes at the Blooming Sounds from Joburg concert. You will also be broadcast internationally across varied platforms. Plus, you will receive a R5000 artist fee and get given a professionally edited audio-visual demo for your portfolio.

“As a business, Total South Africa is known to take the road less travelled, forging our own path as a business, and as a partner for growth in South Africa, often exploring newer, better ways to do business and to participate in the country’s evolving socio-economic landscape. Arts and culture are key to creating social cohesion and national pride, and it is crucial that business supports the building of nations, especially as citizens of a greater global village,” says Total South Africa’s Corporate Affairs Manager, Nne-Mpho Siaga.

If you think you have what it takes to showcase your music talents at one of Jozi’s funkiest live-streaming concerts since the pandemic, then enter now. Remember only 50 applicants will be considered for the top six places.

Blooming Sounds from Joburg is here to celebrate spring with a renewed music energy. Through these difficult times let the music brighten the future and inspire us with hope!
