Having the support of others is an important part of breast cancer survivorship. Research actually shows that taking part in support groups, where you both give and receive help, is an effective way to reduce the stress and anxiety that can come with a breast cancer diagnosis, says the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
The non-medical programme launched the Ditto project in 2011 to raise funds for external silicone breast prostheses that are provided free of charge to women who have undergone mastectomies. The cost of each prosthesis differs according to size and shape but the average cost is R880.
“To date, we have provided more than 6,500 women with the prostheses. They are external, silicone prostheses that are natural-looking and fitted to each woman. Having a mastectomy is emotionally traumatic and often takes place under severe stress. Having a well-fitted breast prosthesis can have an immediate positive effect on self-confidence.” said Stephné Jacobs, Board Chairperson of Reach for Recovery
Mita Groenewald, Breast Cancer Survivor from Kuils River was diagnosed with lobular carcinoma, the second most common type of breast cancer, in December 2018. In early July 2019, she was admitted to Tygerberg Hospital where she underwent a single mastectomy. “I was surprised by how comfortable I was at the fitting for the prosthesis. It’s so comfortable and everyone thinks it’s my real breast, you cannot tell them apart,” she said.

He regularly gives talks on breast and thyroid health matters at events and donates his speaking fee to the Ditto project.
