Auto Electrician moves up the ladder and creates jobs in Mpumalanga

For many years repairing car starters, alternators, motor electronics and running engine diagnostics has been predominantly known to be “a man’s job”. Alongside her partner, Biona Mutamira, Gabisile Ndlovu is turning the tides. They established Excserpro, an auto electrical solutions company located in Evander, Mpumalanga.

They have employed in house auto electricians who specialize in the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic systems in cars and other motor vehicles. This includes the repairing of starters, alternators and rewiring of all types of vehicles and machines.

“After matric, I worked as a general worker, cleaning starters and alternators, at an auto electric firm. I got bored and wanted to pursue other things but was instead offered an apprenticeship, “said Ndlovu. She worked as an underling to her current business partner before heading off to college to study electrical engineering at Gert Sibanda TVET College.

Ndlovu owns 60% of the business and focuses on repairing the wiring of automotive machines like TLBs tractor-loader-backhoe (TLBs), excavators, welding machines and generators. “We do auto electrical work and remanufacture and supply auto electrical car spares,” she said.

Mutamira and Ndlovu were supported by the Seda Technology Programme (STP) which helped them to set up the company website, acquire advertising boards, understanding of human resources policies and how to handle accounting systems.

STP focuses on sustainable enterprise development through technology business incubation, monitoring, evaluation and improvement of service and product quality and standards. They also provide grant funding, promotes the transfer of technology, links investors with small and medium enterprises and facilitates technology partnerships between local and international companies.
