Six Women are to exhibit their art work titled Difficult Women on March 10 , 2020 at the National Art Museum in Botswana , Gaborone.
The exhibition will feature artworks by six local contemporary artists , Ann Gollife , Kate Kwati ,Noe Matome, Renne Eisen-Khonay, Sedireng Mothibatsela and Veryan Edward. These artists have been key contributors in the local art scene in Botswana for over 20 years. Furthermore, they have been actively involved in emancipating new artist through local training art initiatives.
The Difficult Women Exhibition will be the first of its kind in Botswana ,as it seeks to probe dialogue within the country about gender equity in the industry. The exhibition also hopes address the reason why female artists are not well represented in Botswana together with creating on-going conversation on other prevalent issues such as gender based violence and educating women about rights through this platform.
Eisen-Khinat’s the curator of the exhibition stated that she hopes that this event will inspire more
female artists in Botswana to be more involved in the artist environment as well as taking up
roles of advocacy in art .
The event according to Eisen-Khinat is meant to make the voice of women in the local art scene heard “The female voice is not heard, loudly enough in the local art scene and now more than ever is the time to be heard.” she adds.
She believes that such exhibition events need to be made a regular so that female artists can have
a platform to create their markets on a national and international level. The title “Difficult
Woman” is to show that there is nothing wrong with being a difficult women and not fearing
being called one or being labeled as one .
“These are exactly the pivotal topics the exhibition will bring to light” said Eisen-Khitanv.
The exhibition will run until April 11, 2020.
