The Akhumzi foundation was launched in 2019. following the tragic death of TV personality Akhumzi Jezile. Alex, Akhumzi’s friend and Akhumzi’s mother, Zoleka Jezile put their heads and decided to launch the foundation to change road behaviour and provide support and educate road users to make smart driving choices.
“We wanted to focus on the human side of road accidents and the effect it has on the people who are left behind. I want people to learn to give back like he did. I want the foundation to help us continue his legacy of giving back to the community. He gave back willingly and never advertised it and that’s how we should be,” Alex explained.
In an effort to provide support, the foundation has launched the ‘Get Your License On’ campaign which will fund learners’ licenses as well as driver’s licenses for pupils who are currently in grade 11. Interested candidates can send their essay’s to admin@akhumzijezilefoundation.co.za.
Musa Mthombeni, one of the late Akhumzi’s close friends shared important details on the foundation twitter page on how the campaign will work. “The campaign is open to the Gauteng Province only. Applicants must be in Grade 11, write a 500-word essay on road safety and motivating why having a driver’s license is important for you, the caption reads.
In a previous post, the foundation highlighted the importance of having a driver’s license and urged pupils to follow their social media pages so they could participate. “Having a valid driver’s license is no longer a “nice-to-have”, but a “must-have” they wrote.
