Poor literacy levels remain a concern in South Africa with 78% of children in Grade 3 who can’t read correctly and 65% of Grade 5 pupils who can’t add and subtract whole numbers. Huawei and Gauteng radio station 947 are on a mission to change these staggering statistics through a programme called Today’s Readers, Tomorrow’s Leaders.
The quality of education received in the foundation phase plays a vital role in how a child’s future turns out, said Huawei on its Facebook Page. The campaign aims to promote reading and help transform today’s readers into tomorrow’s leaders.
With the help of 947, the tech giant company is currently building a library in Hammanskraal and plans to fill the shelves with books. However, they need help to raise R400 000 for the books and to lend a hand, they have set up a drive for citizens who believe in the cause by encouraging them to SMS the word “BOOKS” to 42246 and donate R30 towards the R400 000 target.
SMS’s are charged at R30 and free SMS’s do not apply. T&Cs and Service fees apply.
