A new dawn as Khayelitsha Hospital receives life-saving equipment

Khayelitsha, Cape Town – The SA Medical and Education Foundation (SAME) in partnership with various donors has completed a life-saving project at the Khayelitsha District Hospital.

Since its opening seven years ago, the Khayelitsha District Hospital has faced many challenges including overcrowding and a chronic shortage of beds and equipment. The hospital serves a population of over 403 000 people, with 95% of the facility’s catchment area population dependent on public health care. The result is that the hospital runs severely over-capacity which has put a burden on the already insufficient equipment.

In direct response to the some of these challenges, SAME has raised close to R3.5 million donate lifesaving equipment to the Khayelitsha District Hospital’s Emergency Centre and Mental Health Ward. The hospital has received a wealth of brand-new equipment including 65 mental health patient beds, a Hamilton C1 Ventilator, an Ultrasound DC40 with 3 probes, a MAC 2000 machine, a Hyfrecator machine, 16 new patient trolleys with mattress, five HB Meters, and 10 mental health patient chairs.

This project is an ongoing partnership with SAME Foundation for the improvement and upliftment of the hospital
