Community project acquires land and expands into informal settlement

Mama Ntombiā€™s Community Project (MNCP) has been fighting poverty in Pietermaritzburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal for over 7 years. The project seeks to empower orphaned and vulnerable children, and have adopted the motto, ā€œMaking a difference one smiling child at a time.ā€ Having operated from a 15.5m container, in Jika Joe informal settlement, the community project recently acquired land to expand the project in Ezinketheni informal settlement.

Sandra Pillay, the project manager, says, “Our main focus is on education, health, poverty alleviation, elderly care, and community developmentā€. The programme has various activities and courses covering general and sexual health, sports, financial assistance, and family support. They currently provide support to 450 children at Jika Joe and Ezinketheni informal settlements. A total of 300 children are fed daily through the projectā€™s Breakfast Club, and 250 children receiveĀ educational assistance
