An environmental non-profit organisation, Wildlands Conservation Trust, has donated 45 school desks to the school children of Ikhaya le Themba in Imazamo Yethu (Hout Bay).
The desks were all made from 2700 kgs of recycled plastic collected at this year’s Old Mutual Two Ocean Marathon.
This is according to Lauren van Nijkerk, deputy director for Marketing at Wildland Conservation Trust.
We created this nice big bin and placed them all over the route of the Two Oceans and collected all the waste that was placed in there, turned them into planks and created school’s desks.
— Lauren van Nijkerk, deputy director for Marketing at Wildland Conservation Trust
Van Nijkerk says there is a shortage of about 300 000 school desks in South Africa and thought it will be a good idea to lessen the number.
