The third instalment of the āMen in Heelsā walkathon will take place on Saturday, 12 October, from 10h00 to 13h00 at Cedar Square Shopping Centre, Fourways.
The 500-metre walkathon aims to create awareness for breast cancer. Men from all walks of life, including David Lucas, a second time prostate cancer survivor, will be competing in feminine high-heeled shoes to the finish line.
Men are encouraged to get screened for breast cancer as it affects 1 out of 726 men. Research has shown that there may be a link between prostate cancer and breast cancer. A family history of breast cancer is associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer. Certain genetic mutations that increase the risk of breast cancer may result in an increased risk of prostate cancer in men. It is therefore critical that men go for regular screenings for early detection. āAs a second time prostate cancer survivor, The Men in Heels initiative affords me an opportunity to spread this important message in a non-invasive mannerā, said David Lucas.
The āMen in Heelsā walkathon is scheduled to be packed with fun for a cause, inspirational survivor stories and talks by health care professionals. Cedar Square Shopping Centre is a third time venue sponsor for this exciting yet critical initiative. “Cedar Square is honoured to be part of this impactful event,” said Maria Varfis, Group Marketing Head at Accelerate Property Fund. “Supporting this drive is of utmost importance in bringing awareness to breast cancer in men.”
Sponsors in support of the initiative include Cedar Square, Pick n Pay and 2 Cute Cedar Square. ER24 will be on standby to attend to any emergencies and injuries which may happen. Participants of the walkathon will receive exciting prizes, pamper vouchers and a light meal.
