Surf helping South Africans shine in their careers

SURF washing powder has provided an online e-learning platform called The Surf School of Shine, which offers free online courses for the unemployed.

The School of Shine website is a platform that helps young people build career confidence through free online courses and inspirational content. The courses are designed to equip unemployed individuals with work-readiness soft skills to help many South African youth seeking employment. SURF has partnered with actress and influencer Candice Modiselle, Motivational speaker and businessman, Vuki Dlamini as well as Career Coach and Brand Strategist, Lungisa Sonqishe.

Candice says that she aligned herself with many educational platforms and skills development initiatives and decided to be affiliated with The SURF School of Shine because it goes back to the basics to make career guidance accessible to everyone who needs it.

SURF kicked off The Surf School of Shine Campaign at the TVET College in Ekurhuleni, Germiston in September 2018. The collaboration aims to help alleviate youth unemployment through designated courses. The courses on the e-learning platform include career planning, finding the right job, interview tips, financial education & budgeting information. “This is the start of a worthwhile partnership between our influential spokespeople and SURF’s School of Shine ambitions,” says PR Brand Specialist, Mandisa Mbenenge, at Unilever South Africa. SURF wasn’t looking for faces for the brand but rather brand advocates who believe in helping us make a sustainable impact in our country”.

The recent report by Statistics South Africa stated that 29% of South Africans are unemployed and 55.2% of the unemployed .”South Africa’s unemployment rate has risen tremendously; while part of it is due to the shortage of available jobs, another is that most job seekers do not understand the significance of investing a good amount of time and effort in their job search activities and preparation,” says Sonqishe. The e-learning platform aims to close this gap by offering courses which focus on career planning, finding the right job, interview tips, financial education and budgeting information. Colleges can expect to see and hear inspirational talks from Candice Modiselle and Vuki Dlamini, who will individually visit the colleges to engage, educate and promote the free online platform.
