34 year old former Warriors captain and Kaizer Chief midfielder Willard Katsande has donated R50 000 worth groceries to at least 200 families in Mutoko his rural home to help alleviate their suffering during the coronavirus pandemic.
Zimbabwe’s Daily News says Katsande took to his Mutoko relatives groceries worth R50 000. The groceries included mealie-meal, flour, washing powder, sugar, beans, salt, cooking oil and other unspecified items.
When interviewed, the midfielder said he saw it fit to give back to his parent’s rural home where people struggled much than giving back to Mutare where he grew up. He said this decision was because people in Mutare had better living ways than people in the rurals.
“Hustling is far better in Mutare than in Mutoko,” said Katsande.
The player further said he clearly understood the economic crisis in Zimbabwe and he knew the situation was worse for the Mutoko residents. He said it was painful to him to even imagine how people were coping in Mutoko.
Thousands of Zimbabweans have been struggling and fighting with poverty much than fighting with Covid-19 since the President announced the national lockdown. Most families in Zimbabwe’s rural areas live in informal sectors where life is now hard as small businesses have been banned with no exit plan on the table.
Katsande took to twitter that he had helped people who had been hit hard by the pandemic. He said despite these difficult times, he would offer support to others where he could.
“COVID 19 has changed our lives and in these extraordinary times, we had to do our part and help by donating food parcels in my rural area of Mutoko in Mashonaland East,” tweeted Katsande.
