The City of Cape Town would like to congratulate the 2023 Netball World Cup for winning the Event of the Year award at the Hollard Sport Industry Awards held last night.
he Sport Industry Awards are considered the most prestigious honour in the business of sports events.
The 2023 Netball World Cup, hosted in Cape Town between July and August, was up against numerous other nominees, including the Cape Town E-Prix, ICC Women’s World Cup and Absa Run Your City Series.
Half of the eight events nominated for the main event award were hosted in Cape Town over the last year.
On behalf of the City of Cape Town, I would like to congratulate the 2023 Netball World Cup LOC on this accolade. The award is a culmination of the hard work put in by the LOC, Netball South Africa, the City of Cape Town, Western Cape Government, National Government and other partners in making the tournament a success. Honourable mentions for the Cape Town E-Prix, ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, and Absa Run Your City Series on their nominations. The fact that so many of these events were hosted in Cape Town is testament to the Mother City’s capability as a major events destination,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith.
Member of the Portfolio Committee overseeing Safety and Security and Events, Councillor Rhynhardt Bresler, attended the awards evening on the City’s behalf.
‘Accolades such as these are a great reward for the hard work these event organisers put in to make these spectacular occasions possible for the greater public. This also reaffirms the importance of collaboration and partnerships between public and private sector players in this industry. As the City, we remain committed to providing support to events being hosted in Cape Town. This is also an invitation to national and international event organisers to bring their events to Cape Town. We have the expertise, the infrastructure, world-class venues and the most passionate fans for a truly memorable occasion,’ said Bresler.
The 2023 Netball World Cup was also nominated for Sports Organisation of the Year and in the ‘African Excellence’ category.
