Captain Fanplastic, the world’s positive pirate who indulges in plastic pollution, has once more set sail on another adventure in the latest project. A momentous, educating & captivating auditory experience led by two renowned artists.
The programme’s new audiobook voiced by the multi accoladed South African singer & actress Zolani Mahola āThe One Who Singsā and produced by Italian award winning musician Alessandro Gigli uses song, story & environmentalism to yet again spread the good fight against plastic pollution. In a bid to change long term behaviour around plastic and contribute to the United Nationsā Global Goals this kind of education is essential for all.
This edutainment couldnāt come at a more crucial time; to change the common ill perceptions like it is āok to litterā vital education is needed to encourage young people to become custodians of their environment. With the constant rise in environmental threats pollution through the abuse of this plastic and other materials is yielding harrowing negative effects to many ecosystems.
Moreover, this is not the first time the use of rhythm & rhyme as well as song & dance to educate in particular within environmental awareness. Generations before experienced the now famous 3 Rs: reduce, reuse & recycle in the 1970s. While in the 1980s South Africa had Zibi & the Gang with the āZap it in Zibi canā, which reverberated in many minds and still does today.
Captain Fanplastic is thus on the right track.Every year 8 million metric tons of plastic ends up in our oceans due to land-based activities (only 7.1% of waste is currently recycled in South Africa). This waste conundrum is partially due to a lack of environmental awareness, service delivery and understanding of the impacts
this waste has.
Commenting on the inroads made since its inception in 2018, facilitator & partnership manager Yanga Gceya said āCaptain Fanplastic is here to teach a new generation vital environmental literacy skills like the 5Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle.
We are grateful for this collaboration as it promises to bring an intersectional soundwave of change within music, literacy, & conservation. Pollution affects many communities from Rio to Rome & even Rustenburg. Thus, we are excited and privileged to have a renowned voice & face to carry this message.ā
Zolani Mahola āThe One Who Singsā added āsong is a powerful medium to transfer knowledge and inspire change. The young are the ones we should be inspiring to be the change & reignite hope for us in the plight of pollution. Captain Fanplasticās mission is very vital for a cleaner tomorrow for our oceans & environment. Which is why I cherished being involved in inspiring this change.ā
Yanga further expressed; āWe thank the musical genius Alessandro for being able to compose & produce Captain Fanplasticās sound in order to navigate a #NoTrashButTreasure mindset & future that sees plastic as a valuable and essential part of life and should be treated as such.ā
