Auto shows are held to exhibit a variety of new vehicles from carmakers, as well as to point to the future path of the auto industry. At the Auto Shanghai 2021, Chery showcased an array of exciting models, such as Tiggo 8 Pro 2.0 TGDI and Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV, and launched “CHERY POWER”, revealing the truth of a technology powerhouse embracing changes through continuous innovation.
Technology has always been the core attribute of the Chery brand. As a Chinese auto maker that thrives on and takes root in technology, the brand is committed to conducting in-house innovation, improving engineering of fuel-powered vehicles, polishing forward-looking technologies of the “new four trends” of auto industry, so as to embrace the future, and share excitement and joy brought by technological innovation with global consumers.
Solid Improvement on Engineering of Fuel-Powered Vehicle
Chery’s technological innovation efforts involve making solid improvement on fuel-powered vehicles. Over the years, Chery has persisted in independent innovation and developed the core technologies of car building. The power technology in particular has made Chery stand out among its Chinese competitors and achieve its ambition.
To date, Chery has manufactured more than 8.8 million engines. Six of Chery’s engines have been awarded Top Ten Engines of “China’s Heart”, with a global sales volume exceeding 8.8 million units. Furthermore, Chery has also grasped the core technology of aero-engines, reaching new height in engine development. At Auto Shanghai, Chery unveiled “CHERY POWER”, which provides power solutions such as fuel and hybrid.
Three stages of technological innovation led to a 45% maximum thermal efficiency of fuel and hybrid power engines, and a fuel saving rate over 95%. A full product line-up of PHEV and HEV powered by all-new hybrid technology will be launched for more advanced and diversified power options.
For fuel power solutions, Chery unveiled its 2.0 TGDI engine with a maximum power of 192KW and peak torque of 400N•m, unleashing a robust and peerless performance.
For hybrid power solution, Chery introduced DHT, its world-leading full-featured hybrid architecture, characterized by China’s first dual motor drive, 9 working modes, 11 gears, and TSD dual-axis drive, for a super-smooth driving experience.
At the press conference of Auto Shanghai, Chery unveiled the new Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 8 Pro, which are powered by 2.0 TGDI engines. Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV, Chery’s first PHEV model powered by DHT, also made its debut, featuring hybrid four-wheel drive integrating dual-motor in the front and a single motor at the rear, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time within 5 seconds, and a comprehensive fuel consumption per 100 km of less than 1L.
Technologies of the “New Four Trends”
In addition to making solid technological improvement on fuel-powered vehicles, Chery puts emphasis on forward-looking technologies of the “new four trends”. It is one of the first carmakers working on new energy, intelligent connection, and autonomous driving.
To advance its new energy technology, Chery has formulated a “457” technological development plan, which includes four new energy product platforms, five universal subsystems, and seven core technologies covering BEV, HEV, REEV, FCEV, and more.
Chery has made breakthroughs in intelligent connection and autonomous driving in the past two years. It launched an intelligent connection system i-Connect as part of its Chery Lion strategy, realizing the implementation of artificial intelligence technologies such as enhanced intelligent voice interaction, AI face recognition, and AI i-Connect butler, and applying them to core products such as Tiggo and Arrizo. Chery Lion Cloud OS has now a 4.0 version and a user base of over 500,000.
Chery has launched i-Drive technology platform for autonomous driving, aiming to create a smart transportation ecosystem featuring synergy between people, vehicles and roads. It realized Level 2.5 autonomous driving technology in 2020, and plans to achieve Level 4 highly autonomous driving technology in 2025. It is worth mentioning that at Auto Shanghai, Chery announced a comprehensive strategic cooperation on vehicle-cloud synergy with Baidu to jointly build autonomous driving engines, big data engines, and automotive safety engines.
Technological breakthroughs have boosted sales performance despite market setback. Data shows that in the first quarter of 2021, Chery sold nearly 210,000 units, a 91.6% increase year on year; it exported a total of 53,441 units, a 101.6% increase year-on-year.
