Life Healthcare gears up for World Cancer Day

This year World Cancer Day (4 February 2020), will focus on the cancer epidemic that continues to affect millions worldwide.“Cancer occurs when mutations take place in the DNA within cells and divides uncontrollably, causing overstimulation of cell growth that damages and destroys normal body tissue. These cells then potentially affect tissue in the surrounding organs. It is important that the signs, symptoms and treatment options of cancer are understood as early diagnosis is key in successfully treating this disease,” explains Dr Louis Kathan, lead of Life Oncology.

With the advancement of technology, various new and improved treatment options have come to the fore. “Cancer treatment varies according to the type of cancer and where it is in the body. Life Oncology centres deliver the most advanced oncology care, including the use of Novalis Radiosurgery treatment, one of the most advanced cancer treatment options available. This technology has revolutionised cancer treatment and has helped thousands of patients’,” says Dr Kathan.

90% of cancers are caused by environmental and lifestyle factors and can be avoided by leading a healthy lifestyle and circumventing harmful habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, however, not all cancers can be prevented. It is for this reason that early detection is key to saving the life of a patient. Understanding the signs and symptoms of cancer and understanding the history of cancer within your family can assist in identifying risk factors and finding solutions to manage these risks. Regular check-ups are also vital for early diagnosis and effective treatment.

The continuous developments in new technology to treat a variety of cancers provides hope for those suffering from the physical, emotional, and mental pain cancer causes. “Life Oncology is committed to implementing state of the art technology as we understand that this is the ultimate catalyst to successfully treating our patients and improving their survival and functional outcomes,” concludes Dr Kathan.
