Churches offer psycho-social support to COVID-19 patients

In an effort to lend a helping hand amid the pandemic, Zimbabwe Christian Alliance (ZCA) is offering psycho-social support to COVID-19 patients in the country.

ZCA has been supporting many initiatives even before the outbreak of the pandemic. The ZCA has rolled out psychosocial support to both isolation and quarantine centres at Ekusileni Medical Centre with mostly COVID-19 positive candidates.

According to Reverend Useni Sibanda, he understands how important psychosocial support is to the victims of the pandemic.

While commenting about the initiative, the Reverend said: “The major issue for communities is the lack of awareness, a lot of people are still not aware of the dangers. We still have social behaviours that are a threat. In terms of spreading the pandemic, we still have shebeens in the townships and this is an issue of major concern. We have church leaders whom we have assigned to go around and raise awareness. We have posters that we have donated. We have realised that unless we change our behaviours we will not be able to stop the spread of the pandemic.”

“The most important thing for us is the social and moral message and to reiterate the importance of people looking after themselves,” said ZCA Board Member Ray Motsi.

Apart from giving psychosocial support, ZCA has also donated the 5 000 litres of sanitisers and liquid soap 50 buckets, 1000 masks, and awareness-raising material monthly to quarantine and isolation centres across the country to compliment the government efforts in the fight against COVID-19.
