Bestmed visits Pretoria children’s homes in honour of Mandela Day

Bestmed Medical Scheme and the University of Pretoria’s TuksSport have partnered once again to make a positive impact in the lives of over 300 children at the Jakaranda and Louis Botha Children’s Homes in Pretoria.

The team handed over a variety of essentials including non-perishable foods, stationery, cleaning supplies, clothing and toiletries on Nelson Mandela Day. These are all critical everyday items for the homes that primarily focus on providing care for children between the ages of three and eighteen.

Jakaranda Children’s Home in East Lynne and Louis Botha Children’s Home situated in Queenswood, care for a combined 327 children – many who have been placed at these homes by the South African Children’s Court due to abandonment, neglect, emotional and physical abuse.

Recognising the importance of holistic development, Bestmed also contributed to the recreational and development programmes of these homes by donating sporting equipment such as netball bibs, poles and balls, soccer nets and balls, cycling gloves as well as arts and crafts supplies. This effort aligns with the company’s goal of promoting physical activity among children, which is important for both their physical and mental wellbeing.

To truly drive the spirit of impact, coaches from TuksSport brought hosted skills clinics in netball and soccer. By hosting these skills clinics, the coaches aim to provide the children with professional guidance and inspiration, to not only enhance their athletic ability, but more importantly, increase their self-esteem and teamwork abilities.

Bestmed’s continuous dedication to corporate social investment (CSI) reflects a broader understanding of the responsibilities that come with being amongst the best in the healthcare industry. By supporting vulnerable communities, the Scheme not only provides immediate assistance but also fosters long-term growth and development, helping to build a healthier, more resilient society.

“We fully believe in the power of community and the positive impact we can make when we come together to support those in need. Our outreach to the Louis Botha and Jakaranda Children’s Homes is a testament to our commitment to making a difference in the lives of these children and we are pleased to be able to play a small part in contributing to their growth and development,” concludes Karen Pienaar, Sponsorship and CSI Specialist at Bestmed.
