The Western Cape’s Department of Agriculture on Thursday released the Agri Worker Household Census.
The census covered 2 991 farms, 11 028 households and 42 928 residents participated.
According to MEC for Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde, the research aims to create a picture of how families who earn their living in the agricultural sector are living.
The research revealed that about 8.5% had a matric certificate and 11 000 had poor eyesight.
With this research we can see where the health and education gaps are and it gives us a good baseline on which to work.

We have established that an optometrist is needed in these areas.

Winde says the information collected has been passed on to other departments to see where they can step in to assist.
