Reforestation project brings new life into the Amazon

A new project hopes to reforest over 74,000 acres (30,000 hectares) of the Brazilian Amazon with 73 million trees.Ā Dubbed as the worldā€™s largest tropical reforestation project, the 6-year initiativeĀ is a huge push towards the nationā€™s reforestation goal of planting 12 million hectares of trees under the Paris Agreement.

ā€œThis is a breathtakingly audacious project,ā€ said M. Sanjayan, CEO of Conservation International, one of the partners behind the effort. ā€œThe fate of the Amazon depends on getting this right ā€” as do the regionā€™s 25 million residents, its countless species and the climate of our planet.ā€

The preservation of theĀ Amazon hasĀ been on theĀ increase and reports have confirmed a 90% drop in illegal logging after the country passed a more aggressive legislation to protect the rainforest in 2004.Ā  Amazon forest is home to the richest biodiversity of any ecosystem on the planet.

Additionally the project is being spearheadedĀ by the Brazilian Ministry of Environment, the Global Environment Facility, the World Bank, the Brazilian Biodiversity Fund, and Amazonia Live.
