Exxaro’s biodiversity focus

Most of Exxaro mining’s  social and labour plan projects are channelled through the Exxaro Chairman’s Fund (ECF) to which all other  operations contribute.

The group spent R88 million on social and labour plans (SLPs) and other community-related projects, mainly on education for teacher and learner development, enterprise development and infrastructure such as building roads and houses.

The company  has also aligned its focus areas to those agreed between the industry and the DMR in since 2013 up until 2017.

Exxaro also employs 17% of  women, compared to the industry average of 11%.Since 2014 Exxaro spent R230 million on community development, social and labour plan projects and discretionary donations. Particular successes have been achieved by the Siyathuthuka Butterfield bakery project in Mpumulanga and the Boitlhamo construction development project and the Mhlasedi poultry farm, both in Limpopo.

Exxaro also has taken a step in saving the environment and have implemented the:African Grass-owl Project which does the following:

  • Monitor and manage the grass-owl population at Matla to ensure that mining and associated activities do not impact on the population.
  • Help ensuring the species’ survival, population growth and general conservation of the grass-owl population at Matla.
  • Manage and reduce disturbance and habitat destruction to prevent impacts on the existing grass-owl population.

Rhino Relocation Project

  • Contribute to the management of rhino meta-populations across international borders.
  • Improve corporate conservation investment through the realisation of meaningful conservation interventions.
  • Raise awareness around the threat of poaching and the work of rangers in developing conservation solutions.
  • Reduce Manketti Game Reserve’s rhino population to 70% of maximum stocking rate to ensure maximum breeding productivity.
  • Significantly increase Botswana’s Key-2 rhino breeding population through the introduction of additional rhinos from South Africa.
  • Spread the security risk.
  • Strengthen sub-regional conservation networks and relationships

Mbulelo Khonjwayo head of CSI and Development at Exxaro said

“Rhino conservation and range expansion projects add enormous value to the survival and protection of the species by creating more viable breeding populations, while the management of rhino populations also entails the conservation of healthy genetic variation.”
