ASEZ WAO Volunteers Clean Newlands

ASEZ WAO hosted the 7281st Worldwide Cleanup campaign in Newlands, Johannesburg. The clean-up campaign was conducted in collaboration with Pikitup, the City of Johannesburg’s official waste management service provider. A total of 83 volunteers gathered on the warm Johannesburg morning to clean up the Old Swimming Pool area which has become an illegal dumping site. Pikitup supplied brooms, rakes, litter pickers and plastic bags to the volunteers.

ASEZ WAO means Save the Earth from first to last and WAO means We are One Family. The young adult workers of

the World Mission Society Church of God practice the virtue of serving mankind by conducting environment cleanup campaigns in 175 countries around the world.

 The young adult volunteer group, which has conducted various environmental clean-ups in South Africa alone, picked up litter, paper, cartons, soft drink bottles, clothing, and plastic. At the end of the cleanup campaign, the volunteers filled more than 200 plastic bags with a capacity of 50 litres.

Through a 7-panel display panel, the guests and community members were shown practical ways to take action to participate in the Green Earth movement such as using recyclable containers and promoting green earth activities. The group aims to raise awareness about the need to create green areas to support the environment and biodiversity.

Councillor Jeffrey Amod thanked the group for their efforts. “Thank you to ASEZ WAO for organizing this cleanup campaign in Newlands. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will give this organization a letter of recommendation.”, he said.

Tania Oldjohn, Senior Project Coordinator in the City of Johannesburg Mayoral Office complimented the youth who devoted themselves to clean the environment.  “It is so great to see so many youth, the next generation, taking the lead in cleaning in the community. I will speak to the Mayor’s office to establish a partnership with you.”, she said.

 ASEZ WAO spokesperson, Thando Matutu said the group will continue to take a step in cleaning the environment with the heart of a mother. “Just as a mother takes care of the whole family with love, ASEZ WAO will continue to conduct volunteer activities with the heart of mother to take care of society which is like our family.”
