Renowned Court of Master Sommeliers Exams Set to Empower South African Wine Industry This September

The prestigious Court of Master Sommeliers (CMS) exams are set to return to South Africa from the 8th to the 10th of September 2024 at L’Avenir Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. This significant event offers South African sommeliers the chance to elevate their professional credentials through the highly respected Introductory Sommelier Certificate and Certified Sommelier Certificate programmes.

These exams are organized in partnership with Chenin Noir, an educational leader in the wine and spirits industry. Chenin Noir is dedicated to cultivating the skills and knowledge of wine professionals across the continent. By hosting these globally recognized certifications, Chenin Noir continues its mission to empower local sommeliers and enhance the South African wine industry’s reputation on the world stage.

About the Court of Master Sommeliers

The Court of Master Sommeliers is globally renowned for setting the highest standards in wine and beverage service. The Master Sommelier certification, considered the pinnacle of professional achievement in the industry, signifies unparalleled expertise and professionalism. The first African Master Sommelier examination took place at the Saxon Hotel in Johannesburg, led by Master Sommeliers Bryan Dawes, Edouard Oger and Nigel Wilkinson.

Programme Details

  • Introductory Sommelier Certificate
    Dates: 8-10 September 2024 (08:00 – 18:00)
    Location: L’Avenir Wine Estate, Stellenbosch
    Cost: £640
    This intensive three-day programme includes two days of coursework—comprising lectures, tastings and practical service demonstrations—followed by a full day of examinations.
  • Certified Sommelier Certificate
    Date: 10 September 2024 (08:00 – 18:00)
    Location: L’Avenir Wine Estate, Stellenbosch
    Cost: £275
    The Certified Sommelier Certificate is an esteemed qualification that recognizes beverage professionals who demonstrate exceptional knowledge, skills and demeanor. The programme consists of a rigorous one-day examination that tests candidates’ theory, practical abilities and tasting proficiency.

Note: To be eligible for the Certified Sommelier Certificate, candidates must first obtain the Introductory Sommelier Certificate.
