Absa, the title sponsor of the Absa African Icons Invitational, is pleased to announce that it has raised R891 000 following the success of the event, which took place from 22 to 25 February 2024. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Drakensberg, the Invitational brought together cycling enthusiasts, community leaders and philanthropists in a shared commitment to support meaningful causes. The event served as a platform to showcase resilience, community spirit and hope.
The funds raised through the event will be directed towards the Widows and Orphans Fund (WOF) and the South African (SA) Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET). These organisations play a crucial role in providing essential support to the families of deceased officers, ensuring the continuation of their legacies within the community. Their inspiring actions and dedication perfectly embody Absa’s new brand and business positioning, “Your story matters”, demonstrating the incredible impact we can achieve when we come together and showcase that every story matters.
The Absa African Icons Invitational, which forms part of the African Icons series, saw 50 riders (including members of Absa’s #SheUntamed community) take on the Drakensberg’s challenging terrains. This initiative champions diversity and inclusion in cycling, particularly uplifting women within the sport. The participants’ determination and spirit shone brightly in support of police officers’ families who have lost their loved ones in the line of duty.
Participants in the African Icons include renowned former rugby union player Joel Stransky, SA world champion mountain-bike racer Greg Minnaar, and founder of Matsimela Ladies Clinics and #SheUntamed mentor and ambassador Caroline Matsimela. Their involvement went beyond enhancing the event’s prestige – it deeply impacted the lives of those Absa aims to support.
