The Soshanguve Top 16 Soccer Tournament, an initiative pioneered by Norman Munyai, Founder of the Mukalanga Foundation, saw youth under the age of 32 from the township of Soshanguve go head-to-head for the championship title over the weekend. After a series of games that kicked off on the last weekend of July, Ezakwakhangela F.C. emerged as champions, walking off with R 20 000 in prize money and brand-new kit sponsored by Vuma, South Africa’s leading fibre provider.
Through the tournament, the Mukalanga Foundation aims to give Soshanguve youth an opportunity to be part of a team, engage in healthy competition and pursue their passion for ‘the beautiful game’, all while giving young people more opportunities to reach their potential and stay out of trouble.
“It’s painful seeing our young people doing drugs and alcohol. We want to take the kids out of the streets and taverns, prevent them from doing drugs and give them a chance at a better future,” says Munyai.
Fibre network provider Vuma, which first partnered with Munyai in 2021, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Mukalanga Foundation in its efforts to create opportunities for local youth. “Whatever we can do to ensure more of our country’s young people are edging closer to achieving the extraordinary future they deserve is a big deal to us, and it gives us so much pride to have been part of this heart-warming and important initiative,” says Taylor Kwong, CSI Manager at Vuma.
The Soshanguve Top 16 Tournament takes place over four days, from 30 to 31 July and again from 06 to 07 August, at the Shaka Stadium in Soshanguve.
