United States Former first lady Michelle Obama has announced that she will be launching a new video series called “A Year of Firsts” highlighting the first year of college for four students.
“We’re teaming up with ATTN to share the stories and experiences of four first-year college students from across the country,” Obama said in a video shared on the ATTN Instagram page. ATTN is a digital media company that focuses on videos by millennials. They previously partnered with former Vice President Joe Biden on a series before the 2018 midterms called “Here’s the Deal,” which focused on encouraging young Americans to vote and broached topics like health care, jobs and education.
The first video is scheduled to be shared mid-January 2020 and will open with introductions from Regan Dunn, Haseeb, Linette Delgado and Robert Booker. According to Obama “Each of them has overcome tremendous odds to get where they are, and throughout the year, they’ll tell us what that first year of college is really like: the ups, the downs and everything in between,”.
Obama notes that by sharing their stories, they’re helping others see that the ups and downs of the first year of college are something everyone goes through. The social media-inspired platform will also be used to create a supportive community for other students who are facing similar challenges.
The series will focus on a variety of issues impacting students during their first year at college, such as making new friends, college affordability and physical and mental health. The videos will be shared through Instagram TV (IGTV)and they will also be produced by Reach Higher, an initiative launched during her husband’s presidency “to help students get to and through college.”
