CLIMATE COMMISSION HOST THE 3RD ANNUAL SKILLS FOR A JUST TRANSITION INDABA 2024

The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC), in partnership with Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and Energy Water SETA (EWSETA), will on Wednesday, 30 October 2024 host the 3rd Annual Skills for a Just Transition Indaba in Johannesburg, to explore localized skilling models required to deliver the human capital for the achievement of our just transition goals.

Building on the inaugural Skills Indaba, the 3rd PCC Skills Indaba will focus on institutional transformation, positioning and understanding gaps for skills development research and implementation efforts for funding and embracing a knowledge platform to root out duplication and inefficiencies. Thus, aligning skills development with the anticipated labour force needs of the future, with particular focus on jobs to support a just transition.

South Africa’s economy is deeply intertwined with sectors such as mining, energy, and manufacturing, which will undergo significant transformation in the coming years. These shifts create both opportunities and challenges. On one hand, there is potential for job creation in emerging green industries such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and circular economy sectors. On the other hand, there is a risk of job losses and increased inequality if workers in traditional industries are not adequately supported through reskilling and upskilling initiatives.

The Indaba will receive a keynote address on Integrating Climate Change Education and Green Skills for a Sustainable future, a discussion on the acceleration of the just transition through skills research to streamline and enhance the impact and strategies on the use of Just Energy Skills Development Zones (SDZs) to align skills initiatives with sectoral needs.
