Budding local retailer matches customers’ purchases to serve needy on Mandela Day

Budding online retailer Yebo Fresh is helping its customers make a difference this Mandela Day, by matching donations of multiples of R67 made through their website. The donations will be matched up to R67 000, and will be converted into groceries for organisations serving vulnerable communities.

Yebo Fresh has been paying it forward since the beginning of lockdown, and in collaboration with various charitable organisations, has delivered the equivalent of over 5 million meals to vulnerable households. Now, they are appealing to new and returning customers to join them in giving back. This Mandela Day, they are giving everyone the opportunity to help an organisation serving vulnerable communities. This will take place in the form of vouchers available on their website, each to the value of R67.

Yebo Fresh will match your purchase to double the value of your donation and will deliver R134 worth of groceries for every R67. Each voucher, along with Yebo Fresh’s contribution, will cover the cost of 30-40 meals for those in need. Customers are encouraged to purchase as many of the vouchers as they feel they can afford, in an effort to provide much needed food aid to a wider audience.

Once a donation has been made to the organisation of the customer’s choice, Yebo Fresh will match the amount and, in the end, convert all proceeds into food hampers and bulk groceries which will be delivered straight to the organisation, be it a children’s home, soup kitchen or community outreach facility.

With their extensive knowledge of township communities in Cape Town, the Yebo Fresh team have come to build invaluable relationships with local organisations working in these areas to help the less fortunate. It is these organisations that will be listed on the website for consumers to pick from when making their donations. Just last week, they teamed up with Run 4 Schools and the Dutch Consulate to deliver over 100 food parcels to less fortunate families in Mitchells Plain. This launched the first of four food drives, which will take place in the coming weeks.

“Since we have been working alongside local community-based organisations like Ikamva Labantu, we’ve realised that there is such a big role that we can fill as an online retailer. We have the ability to deliver fresh products of good quality to areas that in the past have been overlooked by big retailers. That, partnered with our intimate knowledge of the areas in which we operate, has helped us make a difference, and we hope to continue our efforts in the long run”, says Jessica Boonstra, Founder of Yebo Fresh.

“We call on all concerned citizens with the means to act against hunger in our communities to join Yebo Fresh in this unique initiative,” Boonstra concludes.

Selected causes include community kitchens in Hout Bay and Mitchells Plain, a children’s home and a community network in Khayelitsha. To make a donation or place an order, visit the Yebo Fresh website
