The US embassy has launched an Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) programme in Namibia to provide women with the necessary tools to create their own businesses.
Apart from creating their own businesses, the project was established to raise capital, and effectively network with other successful business owners. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the first 2020 group that consists of 28 participants from Windhoek will receive training virtually following lockdown regulations.
The aim of the programme is to train more than 100 every year and deliver additional training courses to participants at Walvis Bay. According to the noted results from this project, many women have made outstanding achievements in the private sector, starting businesses in fields as diverse as software development, skin products, agriculture, hospitality, and business consulting.
“These businesses employ people and provide meaningful services that strengthen their communities, regions, and Namibia as a whole. The Academy of Women Entrepreneurs programme will empower Namibian women to continue launching and growing successful businesses,” the AWE ambassador, Johnson said during the virtual launch.
The AWE programme was established in 2019 and empowers women entrepreneurs in more than 50 countries. The programme is currently run by the US Department of State. This programme was developed to support the White House-led Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative, which is designed to support women worldwide in fulfilling their economic potential.
