Dr. Gcina Mhlope takes storytelling to the South African Book Fair

The annual South African Book Fair was hosted this past weekend at Constitution Hill Women’s Jail. The first day saw over 400 learners and children in attendance for the events schools programme.

Dr. Gcina Mhlope was the author of the day. Her interactive Stories of Africa drew large crowds of learners, teachers and parents. The storytelling told tales of South African animals learning to work and live together despite varying physical differences and diet preferences.  An interactive song and dance was woven delicately into the storytelling, and Dr. Mhlope encouraged those in attendance to “love their language” in several of South Africa’s official languages.

The first day concluded with the highly anticipated announcement of the Sunday Times Literary Awards at the Sunday Times Headquarters in Johannesburg.
