Cape Town Games unite communities

The City’s Recreation and Parks Department successfully hosted the 2024 Cape Town Games on  Saturday, 25 May 2024, at the Sarepta Sport and Recreation Centre in Kuils River. This year’s edition of the annual event was a vibrant celebration of sport and community spirit.

Participants from various areas gathered to compete in friendly competitions across a range of sport and recreational games, including five-a-side soccer, netball, dibeke, dominoes, morabaraba and table tennis.

The 232 enthusiastic participants had advanced from sub-area level competitions, showcasing their skills and sportsmanship at the Cape Town Games finals.

Youth are provided with opportunities to develop skills, gain confidence and compete in friendly competitions through the Department’s Youth League Afterschool programme. They learn to respect peers and foster dedication as they develop their sporting abilities.

Beyond the games, the programme also provided a platform for participants to forge lifelong friendships and experience the joy of teamwork.

‘We are delighted with the turnout and the high level of competition witnessed at this year’s Cape Town Games. These games are more than just about winning and are about community, development and fostering a love of sport and recreation among our youth,’ said Councillor Patricia van der Ross, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health.’

The Cape Town Games continue to be a cornerstone event for the City, emphasising the importance of sport in bringing communities together and promoting healthy, active lifestyles.
